What Is AFib?

Atrial fibrillation is a condition that disrupts your heartbeat. A glitch in the heart’s electrical system makes its upper chambers (the atria) beat so fast they quiver, or fibrillate. This causes the lower chambers (the ventricles) to beat out of sync. AFib can be dangerous because it raises your risk of stroke and heart failure. Not a Normal Heart Rhythm or Rate Usually, the atria and ventricles work together so the heart pumps blood in a steady rhythm. But in AFib, they don't. The irregular beats can cause a fast, fluttering heart rate -- 100-175 beats per minute -- instead of the normal 60-100 beats per minute. Warning Signs For many people, AFib doesn't cause obvious symptoms. But when there are, they'll often include: - An uneven pulse - A racing or pounding heart - A feeling that your heart is fluttering - Chest pain - Feeling short of breath - Lightheaded or dizziness When your heart is in AFib, your blood doesn't move well throughout your body. You may feel: - Dizzy or faint - Breathless - Weak and fatigued When It's an Emergency AFib isn't always a cause for alarm. But you should call 911 if you have: - Severe chest pain - Uneven pulse and feel faint - Signs of a stroke, such as numbness or slurred speech - And let your doctor know whenever something doesn't feel right. Greater Risk of Stroke When your heart isn't pumping as it should, the slow-moving blood can pool inside, which makes it easier for clots to form. If that happens, and a

E-pharmacies operating illegally via site linked to Aarogya Setu: Chemists to govt

A lobby of over 850,000 chemist outlets across India has asked the government to delink the Aarogya Setu Mitr portal from the government's Covid tracker Aarogya Setu app, saying several "foreign-funded and illegally operating" e-pharmacies were using the portal to advance their business interests in India..

The portal lists several e-pharmacies and telemedicine services

"We are shocked and concerned to find that www.aarogyasetumitr.in is being used by foreign funded and illegally operating e-pharmacies to advance their business interests in India even though the business model adopted by the e-pharmacies is illegal, injuncted by orders of Hon'ble Delhi High Court and can cause grave damage to the health and well being of citizens," the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) said in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Calling it a matter of grave concern, it said that listing of e-pharmacies is "discriminatory and unfair" to the individual retailers who are capable of delivering medicines at the doorstep but have not been given market exposure through the Aarogya Setu app or the portal.

If you’ve been on the road lately and noticed other drivers sporting face masks, you might've wondered if they know something you don’t – Should I be wearing a mask while driving my car? If you’re traveling alone, then no. You don’t need to wear a face-covering in the car if no one else is in there with you. The Basics: Face Masks Confused by all the different face masks out there? Here’s a breakdown of what they do. ABOUT That said, you may find yourself in other situations that make wearing a mask while driving a good idea. For example: If you’re in the car with people who do not reside with you (in this case, it might be a good idea to avoid using the “recirculation” setting on your air conditioner or to open the car windows for air circulation) If you’re sick and have other people in the car If you feel anxious about being out in public right now and keeping a mask on comforts you If you’re traveling a short distance between stops and don’t want to take the mask off only to have to put it back on again immediately Since it’s generally a good idea to avoid touching your face mask (because it might be germy), it makes sense to just leave it on for a while instead of taking it on and off frequently. But if you do drive with it, understand that wearing a mask can reduce your field of vision. Always weigh the benefits of wearing a mask in your car against the poten

HIV drug may replace hydroxychloroquine in Covid defence

India's top health research body is reviewing its treatment guidelines for Covid-19 and may drop hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) from the protocol due to increasing doubt over its effectiveness, people in the know told ET.

In the revised treatment protocol expected to be released soon, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is likely to include HIV combination drugs, and FDA-approved Ivermectin along with supplements of zinc and Vitamin C to improve immunity and possibly reduce viral replication, they said..

It now plans to conduct a trial on HCQ’s effectiveness. “The disease is evolving and now that we know that HCQ is not working, it should be removed from the treatment protocol,” a person familiar with the development told ET. “Rather other drugs which have proved to be efficacious should be added into the new protocol.” As reported by ET on Monday, with some microbiologists opposing the use of HCQ for Covid-19, a debate is raging among members of ICMR’s task force over continuing with the recommendation.

The members of the task force have given their recommendations,” one of the sources said. “There has been sufficient push back from the microbiologists against HCQ within the task force.”
